Specialists / Consultants (SMOs)

We employ approximately 360 Senior Medical Officers (SMO) and Senior Dental Officers (SDO) at Te Whatu Ora Southern. As you’ll know, the size of our hospitals allows for our staff to learn from one another, and as such you’ll thrive off teaching and learning from others on the job. Our talented team of SMOs, Medical Specialists and Consultants and Fellows lead a vast array of specialty services, including: anaesthesia, general surgery, intensive care, mental health, and emergency medicine, and many more.

“There’s a strong community – at work and in general – I felt at home and welcomed.”

“It really is a city – small, but not small minded. It is full of well-educated, well-read, well travelled, cultured people. But down to earth and very welcoming. There’s a real connection to the environment too. People really care.”

So, are you ready to make the leap? No matter where you’re at with your decision to move to Southern, we want to hear from you. Phone (03) 470 9604 or email Agatha.chen@southerndhb.govt.nz and we can provide support and advice as you plan your move throughout the recruitment process.
