Midwifery

There’s something special about playing a role in a woman’s journey to motherhood. Your compassion and dedication will be a perfect fit at Dunedin Hospital’s Queen Mary Maternity Unit where our focus is providing a safe and positive birthing experience to all expectant mothers in our region. We are equipped to provide all levels of care, from healthy through to high-risk pregnancies. And the hospital also has a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for infants requiring specialist care.

We work closely alongside our region’s compassionate and dedicated midwives to provide seamless care for the mothers in our care and assist in the birth of around 1,800 babies per year.

Southland Hospital also provides care for women at all levels of need; from low-risk, healthy pregnancies to those who need more assistance/monitoring and/or obstetric care. As with all our hospitals in the Southern Region, you’ll find a unique brand of care and compassion as we assist in the birth of 1,200 babies a year. Again, we work closely with our women’s chosen LMCs to ensure they have as positive experience as possible as we help them navigate one of life’s biggest moments and beyond.

Respect and care for women is at the core of what our midwives do, and in a role where no two days are the same, it helps to work in a place where you truly feel at home. Our midwives love what they do and they love where they do it, learn a little bit more about what this means for some of them.
