Unit Manager

Unit Manager – Ophthalmology & ENT

  • Permanent, full time leadership opportunity
  • Make your mark – champion change in this pivotal position!

It’s time for us to do things differently here in our Specialist Surgery team - with a goal of establishing modern, responsive and sustainable departments that value our patients time, and ensuring our staff have efficient processes and the tools they need to do their jobs effectively, do you share our vision?

We need a leader that can inspire, support and embrace change within an environment of continuous transformation and improvements, someone that constantly challenges the status quo and is confident to make the tough decisions. That someone could be you!

About the Teams

Reporting to the Service Manager of Specialist Surgery, this role will see you heading the leadership team in ENT and Ophthalmology teams alongside our Clinical Coordinator and Administrative  Supervisors, working in collaborative partnership with Nursing, Administration, Medical and Allied Health professionals to support, coordinate and monitor performance within these key services. Our teams are diverse covering multiple professions.

About the opportunity

This Unit Manager role will be responsible for the Eye and ENT departments at Dunedin Hospital, and have collaborative involvement across all of the specialist surgery services. Eyes and ENT are 2 large services, each with significant demand and very complex challenges – which is why this is an exciting opportunity!

You will work very closely with the Service Manager and be the momentum behind the improvements we are going to make for our patients and teams.

The day to day running of the eye department is largely taken care of with the very capable Administration Supervisor and Clinical Coordinator supporting you, so your role will be to focus on the planning, always keeping the bigger picture in mind and ensuring all the pieces of the puzzle are connected to enable a great patient journey and empowering our staff to deliver great care. Of course, you will maintain the oversight of the day to day operations and help with any issues or planning required to ensure things are working well.

Similarly, the ENT and Audiology Department (on the Wakari site) runs very well day to day due to the excellent teams working well together – so what the ENT service needs is a great leader to work through some great ideas the team have to help their patients.

What we need/About You

We need a confident manager and leader who is used to working in complex systems. We need a role model of Our Values, a great communicator and a doer.

You will need to demonstrate how you have contributed to change within the health care system that you have been involved with, or a related complex field. It is not essential that you have a health qualification, but it certainly would be desired for these 2 services. You need to have management or leadership experience and ideally some management qualification(s) along with experience leading large, complex and diverse teams.

Contributing to the success of this role will be your proven leadership capability – with an innate ability to motivate those around you, create a positive environment, to clinically engage and effect change where and when required. You’ll foster a culture of innovation and strategic thinking; you’ll know how to ‘get things done’; you’ll have proven experience in building effective teams and developing direct reports and of high importance is your ability to demonstrate what we call ‘managerial courage’

You’ll be systems focused with the ability to identify areas for improvement in terms of processes as you lead the team to achieve timely and appropriate service outcomes whilst keeping the patient and community at the centre of everything we do.
