About the team

Our Child Development team is a close knit and supportive team with a mix of skills, knowledge and experience. We are committed to innovative practice and strive to provide an equitable and evidence-based service for children and their Whānau.

Mō te tūranga | About the role

You will be based in our Child Development Service/Ratoka Whakapuāwai Tamaiti at Southland Hospital, and you will be involved in providing:

• A Family Centred Model (where the child and family is the centre of any planning) and includes task focused and psychosocial aspects
• Social work involvement which can be short term as only a brief intervention is required, or long-term involvement may be required.
• Assessments that are varied and may include gathering family history, liaison with various community organisations including NGOs and the education sector.
• Funding - working alongside parents to ensure their child is receiving the appropriate benefits and are linked into appropriate organisations such as Kia Roha/Your Way or long-Term Chronic Health
• Advocacy which includes advocating for the rights of the child and the parent when appropriate
• Working alongside the child and the parents where there is significant life changing adjustments around daily living and the grief and loss process associated with a child with a disability

Mōu ake | About you

As a social worker in this team, you will have sound social work knowledge and skills, be a team player with excellent communication skills and work cohesively as part of the interdisciplinary team.

To be successful in this position, you will also need to demonstrate the following:

• Be registered with the New Zealand Social Workers Board (NZSWRB) and hold a current Annual Practicing Certificate.
• An ability to think on your feet and be experienced at working under pressure whilst multi-tasking.
• A strong understanding of social determinants of health and the impact this has on client health and social needs.
• A sound knowledge of family violence and child protection issues and be able to respond to challenging situations appropriately.
• Being adaptable and flexible allowing you to work effectively with your clients and within a changing health environment. 

• Excellent organisational and communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and build relationships with a diverse range of people.
• Be a great team player, with the confidence to work effectively within an inter-disciplinary team
• Hold a current, clean, and full New Zealand Driver’s Licence

Previous experience working with tamariki and families is preferred but not essential.

Utu whānui |Salary range

This role belongs to the PSA/DHBs Allied, Public Health and Technical Multi-Employer Collective Agreement and falls between Step 1 ($77,087 p.a) and Step 8 ($110,210 p.a pro rata) of the Degree-Based Allied, Public Health and Technical scale.
