About the Role
A new and exciting opportunity has become available for a permanent Midwife Manager - District role to join our organisation. In this new exciting role, the Midwife Manager- District will have overarching operational responsibility across the district, providing operational oversight across all the maternity settings in Southern (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary). The candidate will work closely with the General Manager- Medicine, Women’s & Children and the Director of Midwifery Southern, and in partnership with commissioning and other relevant stakeholders.
The role offers the opportunity to travel to different localities and build strong connections and a robust network across the district contributing from leadership perspective, include but not limited to chairing and participating in governances and committees, as well as leading reviews.
About Us
Southern maternity services encompass a tertiary hospital in Dunedin, a secondary hospital in Invercargill, four Primary Maternity Units (PMUs) under HSS (Queenstown, Wanaka, Oamaru, Alexandra), three Primary Maternity Units under Trusts (Balclutha, Gore, Winton) and four maternity Hubs (Tautapere, Lumsdon, Te Anau, Rainfurly). Southern District welcomes roughly 3500 babies per year, and 80% of their whanau live one or more hours away from a base hospital, in rural localities most of them nationally and internationally well known for their beauty, such as Central Otago, Queenstown and Wanaka.
The senior midwifery team includes Midwives Managers, CMMs, and coordinators managing maternity wards and PMUs, alongside a professional district team which includes midwife coaches and educators, MQSP coordinators, MCWCP coordinators and lactation consultants/BFHI coordinators.

About you
Alongside your inspiring leadership style and extensive midwifery knowledge, our ideal candidate will also be an excellent communicator, a creative thinker with a strategic approach to operational matters. Our candidate will have a work ethic and values which honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi and are aligned to the Pae Ora (Healthy future) whole-of-system approach and the whanau centred holistic Māori world view.
Some of the skills we are looking for are:
- Registered Midwife with current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) and no conditions.
- Post Graduate qualification/ Master’s degree
- Significant senior managerial/clinical/operational leadership experience acquired in New Zealand, with the ability to think strategically.
- Ability to manage a budget, with documented experience in financial planning preferred.
- Has the ability to provide direction for and evaluate midwifery care
- Extensive knowledge and core understanding of Te Tiriti principles and Tikanga.
- Strong communication skills and ability to develop and maintain great relationships in complex environments.
- Demonstrated competence in a leadership role.
- Proficient computer literacy.
- A broad knowledge of the health and disability sector and knowledge of relevant health related legislation.
- Active member of NZ College of Midwives.
- Maintains professional portfolio.
