Mō te tūranga | About the role
This General Medicine Tutor Specialist Role is a structured 6-month, accredited position, from August 2023 - Jan 2024. We are piloting a Medical Tutor Specialist position (Medical Officer Special Scale (MOSS) rotation) which will provide oversight of our General Medicine inpatient teams at Dunedin hospital. The advanced trainees in this program will work closely with the Clinical Director and Consultant Physicians to ensure an efficient and high quality service.


Candidates will need to have completed most of their training in General and Acute Care Medicine according to the current RACP criteria: (at least) 30 months towards their fellowship requirements in General Medicine, including 6 months core General Medicine and 6 months of a high acuity run.


A work week includes ~1:6 call with post-acute and standard ward rounds with their junior staff. General Medicine outpatient clinics. And adequate time available to do project work if required. Supervision, both direct and indirect, will be provided by other SMOs including a consultant available for advice at all times when on call. This is an excellent opportunity to hone specialist skills before becoming fully vocationally registered. It is intended to aid the transition from registrar working under supervision to specialist providing supervision to junior staff.


Dunedin Hospital is a tertiary level hospital with a full range of elective and acute surgical specialities and can offer you a varied and challenging array of Internal Medicine specialism. Ideally, we are looking for someone with the following skills and experience to complement our team:

  • A team player with exceptional interpersonal skills who builds effective relationships both within and external to their team
  • Is solution focussed and can demonstrate excellent decision making and priority setting in a clinical environment
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and passing on their knowledge to junior members of staff


Mōu ake | About you
You will need to be in your last 6 months of GM advanced training. We would also consider candidates who have FRACP in another specialty and are in their final six months of their General Medicine training.

Utu whānui | Salary range
This role belongs to the ASMS Collective Agreement MOSS Scale and falls between ($129,547) and Step 15 ($195,800) p.a (pro-rata).
