Are you looking for a new challenge?  Southern District Health Board has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced Medical Secretary to join our friendly team in Dunedin Hospital on a full-time, permanent basis.


About the Team/Service

Dunedin Hospital is the Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery centre for Southern District Health Board. We are fortunate to be able to offer excellent training opportunities both locally and internationally, as well as maintaining close relations with the prestigious Otago University. The Cardiology Department itself is warm, welcoming and social.


About the Role

The Medical Secretary’s key purpose is to effectively contribute to the smooth running of the service by providing an efficient and timely administrative support function that is responsive and flexible to the changing needs of the service.


This is a busy and varied role. In order to be successful you will need to bring the following skills and experience:

  • Transcription / typing ability / medical terminology
  • Solid knowledge of office systems and procedures
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly in the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of the importance for privacy, and the ability to deal with patient information in a sensitive and confidential manner
  • Strong attention to detail, and the ability to effectively multi-task

Our ideal candidate will be available Monday to Friday between the hours of 8.00am and 5.00pm.  Exact working hours will be discussed at interview.

The salary range for this position is between $52,080 - $59,759 pro-rata and will be based on relevant experience and qualifications.

We are looking for a team player with excellent communication skills, and the ability to deal with a variety of people and tasks, often all at the same time! 

To enjoy the Medical Secretary position you’ll be the kind of person who likes a fast paced and varied work environment. As you’ll be dealing with patient information it is essential that you show us you have an eye for accuracy and are confident around computer systems. This position carries a varied workload that requires you to work with different specialties, and the ability to prioritise workload to meet deadlines is vital.

Our ideal candidate will be both customer and patient focused. You will be liaising with other hospitals, specialists and health providers to get the best outcome for patients, and accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
