Ward 9A at Wakari Hospital is a 13- bed medium secure unit, it is the inpatient unit for Otago and Southland for those persons who are in the Justice system and require assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. A full complement of a multidisciplinary team delivers a range of therapeutic services and programmes in this setting. Ward 9A has a strong emphasis on linking people with families/ whanau and support persons and reintegration into the wider community.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
This position based at Wakari Hospital, high on the hills above Dunedin, you’ll be working in a secure environment predominantly with patients referred from the courts and/or prison setting for assessment and/or treatment. Increasingly we provide a rehabilitative role in assisting patients with complex needs to reintegrate into the community. Every day you get to work with and alongside a dynamic and committed multidisciplinary team.
Our aim is to provide a safe environment and to plan care that meets individual needs. This includes maintaining links with family and friends whose on-going support and input is often of vital importance to the provision of care.
Mōu ake | About you
You’ll be a registered Enrolled Nurse with a positive attitude and very good communication skills, be able to take direction and work well as part of team. Our ideal applicant will be confident in providing support and assisting patients in psychological and physical ways; be motivated, practical, display initiative, be patient focussed at all times and be able to adapt to a changing, and at time challenging environment. Whilst previous experience in metal health is an advantage, training and support will be provided to those who are new to mental health.
To be the successful candidate for this position you’ll most definitely have a sense of humour, be energetic, with a non-judgemental attitude, have exceptional communication skills and be able to manage your time effectively. You will also have a passion for supporting people with mental illness.

Utu whānui |Salary range
This role belongs to the NZNO Collective Agreement and falls between the Step 1 ($61,146 p.a) and Step 5 ($73,609 p.a pro-rata)
