Southern DHB is currently seeking an ED Trauma House Officer to work alongside a dedicated team of House Officers, Registrars and Surgeons.  The position is for an August commencement, however we would consider an earlier start date by having you commence in a standard House Officer role. 

 

The Role

This role has been specially designed to provide Senior House Officers who are interested in a career in Orthopaedics but who consider they need a little more Orthopaedic experience before taking the step up to Registrar.

The run is 6 months in length, after which you will move to the main House Officer team.   Predominately, the House Officer remains in ED seeing Orthopaedic patients, but will help out in fracture clinics when free.  The role is Monday to Friday 0800 – 1600 hours and is categorised as a D Band.

You’ll be part of a dedicated team providing comprehensive elective general orthopaedic services, as well as 24-hour Orthopaedic Trauma and Orthopaedic Emergency care. 

The scope of your work will be varied and will include exposure to a range of subspecialties including:

  • Trauma surgery
  • Joint replacement
  • Spinal surgery
  • Paediatric Orthopaedics
  • Foot and Ankle Surgery
  • Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Upper Limb Surgery

 

The Hospital

Southland Hospital is a modern, 180+ bed, secondary level 4 base hospital situated in Invercargill, New Zealand.  The Hospital services a population of approximately 108,000 throughout Invercargill, Queenstown, Gore, Stewart Island and rural Southland.

Requirements

  • We are interested in hearing from RMOs with a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience and ideally an RMO who wants a career in Orthopaedics, however, we can consider those who are keen on an ED career.
  • You must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand, and be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.  You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council’s website at www.mcnz.org.nz.
  • A current CV and cover letter.
  • Contact details for 3 Consultants we may contact directly for references. These Consultants will have supervised your day-to-day clinical work and one of the referees provided must be from your current or most recent employer. Please ensure you advise your referees of their nomination so they are aware they will be contacted by the Southern DHB.

 

Candidates who are not currently registered with the New Zealand Medical Council should be aware that it is a requirement of the NZ Medical Council that your qualifications are approved through EPIC. If you have a commitment to working in New Zealand it is highly recommended that you start this process as soon as possible so as to allow your subsequent registration to be undertaken in a timely fashion.
