You will provide comprehensive general paediatric inpatient and outpatient care and support a level two Neonatal service with up to 1,600 deliveries per annum.  Our team also provides outreach/rural outpatient clinics in Gore and Queenstown (one of New Zealand’s major tourist destinations, which is a comfortable 2 hour drive from Invercargill).


Southland Hospital is part of the Southern District Health Board fostering close working relationships with colleagues at Dunedin Hospital and in particular with the team who work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the closest tertiary provider and referral centre.  The Paediatric Department is actively involved in teaching, and we are affiliated with the Dunedin School of Medicine, actively supporting 5th and 6th year medical students, and acting in Senior Lecturer roles with the School of Medicine.

Whether you’re a new Consultant or someone with many years of Specialty Paediatrics under your belt, you will find this role, team and department the perfect place to feel valued.  We are currently expanding our team. You will be joining a dedicated team of four other General Paediatricians with sub-speciality interests with whom you will  share a 1:5 on call roster.  Our team is ably supported by Senior House Officers, Registrars and an experienced, stable nursing staff.


It’s really important to us that you’re a Specialist who believes that the patient is at the centre of all that you do, actively including family/whanau as a standard part of your practice. Your communication skills, with patients and your colleagues will be excellent, and your ability to contribute within a positive team environment will be essential.  You must have completed your specialist training and be eligible for vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand.  The position offers an attractive remuneration package, relocation assistance and continuing medical education (CME) allowance.

Candidates who are not currently registered with the New Zealand Medical Council should be aware that it is a requirement of the NZ Medical Council that your qualifications are approved through EPIC. COVID Vaccination Requirements

Following the update to COVID-19 Public Health Response (Vaccinations) Order 2021, to be employed with Southern DHB you will be required to be fully vaccinated as a health care worker.  If you have already been fully vaccinated you will need to provide proof of this to Occupational Health staff.  If you are not yet fully vaccinated you must make arrangements to undertake your first vaccination no later than the 15 November 2021 and be fully vaccinated, as required by the Order, by 1 January 2022.
