We consider ourselves very fortunate here at the Queen Mary Maternity Unit. Not only do we get to care for fabulous women and families from all across our diverse region, we also get to work alongside kind, compassionate, dedicated midwives and other health professionals to provide a safe and positive birthing experience. 

Each year we birth around 1,800 babies and work closely with the midwifery and medical schools to give the kind of care our patients deserve.


Due to an internal promotion we are now seeking applications from experienced midwives looking to take that next step in their career, to become our next Charge Midwife Manager. You will need to be  a genuine passionate leader who ensures  our service is responsive to the changing needs of our community and health system, and will champion Southern DHB’s ‘right care, right time, in the right place’ model.  We are committed to our maternity unit providing the best care for women, their babies and whanau at this important time in their lives.


Queen Mary is a recently refurbished ward at Dunedin Hospital, the tertiary Hospital for the Southern District. We offer inpatient and outpatient antenatal, delivery and postnatal services and a Lactation Consultancy Service.


You will have strong leadership skills and credibility within the Midwifery profession and be able to demonstrate ability to lead your team and provide support to our diverse community and complex cases.  You are a resilient, calm, yet empathetic, decision maker who leads by example and role models and inspires positive change.  You naturally bring people together to deliver the best outcomes for the women and babies in our care.


As the ideal applicant you will:

  • Possess the ability to think outside the square
  • Communicate effectively and promote best practice and standards of midwifery care
  • Demonstrate sound professional judgement
  • Have relevant knowledge of patient safety and resource management, including budgeting, equipment and staff management
  • Demonstrate clinical quality, safety and best practice. 


It goes without saying, that you will be a Senior Registered Midwife, with extensive midwifery experience. You will have a current NZ APC, relevant postgraduate qualifications and a sound understanding of the New Zealand Midwifery model of care.
